SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY
In accordance with national legislation, School Governing Bodies are responsible for all aspects of a school’s functioning, excluding only the professional (classroom-based) management of the school. The SA Schools Act (1996) establishes that schools belong to the communities in which they exist, and do not ‘belong’ to the State. It is important to note that ‘the community’ is represented by the Governing Body so, in effect, we are all responsible for Graeme College via the Governing Body. An organogram indicating the School’s governance structures appears below.
A new School Governing Body (SGB) for Graeme College was elected in August 2006 for a three year period of office. The SGB meets at least once per term, and reports to a general school meeting annually. The members of the current SGB are as follows:
Headmaster (ex-officio):
8 Parent representatives (elected):
3 Educator representatives (elected):
(1 non-educator representative [co-opted]):
3 Learner (RCL) representatives (elected annually):
Co-opted members for 2009:
The SGB has developed a document which outlines its roles and responsibilities and copies are available from the School Secretary. The SGB has several ‘portfolio committees’ which are tasked with investigating and assisting with issues arising in particular areas, consulting others where appropriate, and making recommendations to the SGB. The portfolio committees and coordinators for 2007-2009 are listed below:
The SGB’s goals for 2007 include revising / finalising all School policies and producing a School Development Plan which outlines the School’s priorities and strategies for the medium-term.
Queries or comments regarding the Graeme College SGB are welcome and should be directed to the Chair, Sandy Stephenson (s.stephenson@ru.ac.za) or the Deputy Chair, Trevor Amos (t.amos@ru.ac.za).
