Carinus Art School Opens New Gates
“Tswala!”- a “New Beginning!”
The school is celebrating the official opening of a new pair of gates made by a grade eleven design in sculpture student, Warren Mills. Warren designed the gates in answer to his project brief, which was to create a functional design object that was inspired by an African aesthetic. This talented learner made them during his practical classes, using a combination of the blacksmith’s ancient art and contemporary steel construction methods of arc welding.
Warren began the project in his final term of grade ten in 2008 and completed the work this year in term one. He has achieved an exceptional level of competency in craftsmanship and technical control over his medium. The gates are entitled “Tswala”, which in Sotho means a “New Beginning”.
This is a rare and overtly mature work from a student of his age and grade.
The Principal, Mrs Reed, and the master of the sculpture department, Mr Graeme Germond, both feel that this rare accomplishment, Provincially and Nationally, needs to be celebrated by our community!
The school hosted an official opening ceremony on Friday 17 April, attended by District Office Officials and others, to toast a most unusual boy with a great and rare talent!
Mr. Peter Reed the Principal of Graeme College, where Warren is a pupil commented … “I am truly proud and amazed. He can go far with talent like this”.
